How To Lighting-Fast StartUp IE

Isn't it annoying when you want to go to a new website, or any other site but your homepage, and you have to wait for your 'home' to load? This tweak tells Internet Explorer to simply 'run', without loading any webpages. (If you use a 'blank' page, that is still a page, and slows access. Notice the 'about:blank' in the address bar. The blank html page must still be loaded..). To load IE with 'nothing' [nothing is different than blank]:

1. Right-click on any shortcut you have to IE
[You should create a shortcut out of your desktop IE icon, and delete the original icon]

2. Click Properties
3. Add ' -nohome' [with a space before the dash] after the end quotes in the Target field.
4. Click OK

Fire up IE from your modified shortcut, and be amazed by how fast you are able to use IE!

Orkut Scrap All Trick

To scrap multiple friends on your list at once, copy and paste the following javascript in your address bar and hit enter.

Procedure

How to send scrap to all/multiple friends:

Step 1: Copy and paste the code (in blue text) in your address bar. Paste it in a window/tab in which orkut is open otherwise it won't be able to load.

Step 2: After pasting it there, press enter. A new page will load.

Step 3: Write your scrap in the space provided. Remember, you cannot send links of non-orkut websites.

Step 4: Chose whether you want to send scrap to one friend, selected friends or all friends. To select multiple friends, use ctrl or shift button. [Caution: Do not send more than 250 scraps at the same time.]

Step 5: Start sending scraps by clicking on 'send scraps'. On the right side of the page, you can see how many scraps have been sent.

Having any problem

Only 18-20 friends received the scrap, the rest didn't

Orkut has placed some restrictions, which doesn't allow sending a scrap to all at once. This has been done because of the increasing amount of spam and hacking tricks. So, if you use a scrap all script, the scrap may go to only first 18-20 friends (first 18-20 friends as per the list shown by the Send Scrap to all script).

For this, send the scrap to first 15 friends at once. Then after waiting for sometime, select the next 15. This may be a bit tiring and boring, but it is better than sending the scrap to everyone individually!

Some things to be kept in mind while using this script:

  1. Paste the code in a tab/window in which orkut is open otherwise it will show 'loading...' but won't load even after a long time.
  2. Don't send links/URL of photos which are not of orkut with this script.
  • You can send links of orkut pages like link of a community, profile, etc.
  • You can send link of an image which is on orkut server. For example, you can send a photo from your orkut album.

Increase your cable modem or DSL speed in XP

This tweak is for broad band cable connections on stand alone machines with winXP professional version - might work on Home version also. It will probably work with networked machines as well but I haven't tried it in that configuration. This is for windows XP only, it does not work on win2000.
I use 3 Com cards so I don't know how it works on others at this point. It does not involve editing the registry. This tweak assumes that you have let winXP create a connection on install for your cable modem/NIC combination and that your connection has tcp/ip - QoS - file and print sharing - and client for microsoft networks , only, installed. It also assumes that winxp will detect your NIC and has in-box drivers for it. If it doesn't do not try this.
In the "My Network Places" properties (right click on the desktop icon and choose properties), highlight the connection then at the menu bar choose "Advanced" then "Advanced Settings". Uncheck the two boxes in the lower half for the bindings for File and Printer sharing and Client for MS networks. Click OK

1. From the windows XP cd in the support directory from the support cab, extract the file netcap.exe and place it in a directory on your hard drive or even in the root of your C:\ drive.
2. next, open up a command prompt window and change directories to where you put netcap.exe. then type "netcap/?". It will list some commands that are available for netcap and a netmon driver will be installed. At the bottom you will see your adapters. You should see two of them if using a 3Com card. One will be for LAN and the other will be for WAN something or other.
3. Next type "netcap/Remove". This will remove the netmon driver.
4. Open up control panel / system / dev man and look at your network adapters. You should now see two of them and one will have a yellow ! on it. Right click on the one without the yellow ! and choose uninstall. YES! you are uninstalling your network adapter, continue with the uninstall. Do not restart yet.
5. Check your connection properties to make sure that no connection exists. If you get a wizard just cancel out of it.
6. Now re-start the machine.
7. After re-start go to your connection properties again and you should have a new connection called "Local area connection 2". highlight the connection then at the menu bar choose "Advanced" then "Advanced Settings". Uncheck the two boxes in the lower half for the bindings for File and Printer sharing and Client for MS networks. Click OK.
8. Choose connection properties and uncheck the "QOS" box
9. Re-start the machine
10. after restart enjoy the increased responsivness of IE, faster page loading, and a connection speed boost.

Why it works, it seems that windows XP, in its zeal to make sure every base is covered installs two seperate versions of the NIC card. One you do not normally see in any properties. Remember the "netcap/?" command above showing two different adapters? The LAN one is the one you see. The invisible one loads everything down and its like your running two separate cards together, sharing a connection among two cards, this method breaks this "bond" and allows the NIC to run un-hindered.

How to Install the Netbeui Protocol on a Windows XP-Based Computer

This article describes how to install the NetBEUI protocol on a Windows XP-based computer. This may be useful because the NetBEUI protocol is not included in the list of installable protocols in Windows XP even though the files that are needed to install the protocol are included with the installation CD-ROM. It is important to note that the NetBEUI protocol is not supported on Windows XP.
The Netnbf.inf and Nbf.sys files are the files that are needed to install the NetBEUI protocol. To install the NetBEUI protocol:

1. Click Start, click Control Panel, and then double-click Network Connections.
2. Right-click the adapter you want to add NetBEUI to, and then click Properties.
3. On the General tab, click Install.
4. Click Protocol, and then click Add.
5. Click Have Disk, insert your Windows XP CD-ROM, open the Valueadd\msft\net\netbeui folder, click the Netnbf.inf file, and then click Open.
6. Click OK, and then click OK to complete the installation.

Increase BROADBAND speed

This is for broad band connections. I didn’t try it on dial up but might work for dial up.

1. make sure your logged on as actually "Administrator". do not log on with any account that just has administrator privileges.
2. start - run - type gpedit.msc
3. expand the "local computer policy" branch
4. expand the "administrative templates" branch
5. expand the "network branch"
6. Highlight the "QoS Packet Scheduler" in left window
7. in right window double click the "limit reservable bandwidth" setting
8. on setting tab check the "enabled" item
9. where it says "Bandwidth limit %" change it to read 0

Effect is immediate on some systems, some need to re-boot. This is more of a "counter what XP does" thing. In other words, programs can request up to 20% of the bandwidth be reserved for them, even with QoS disabled, this is no big deal and most programs do not request it. So, although QOS has caused a big stink because people think it reserves 20% of their bandwidth, you can still disable it, just to be sure, hehe.

Creating strong passwords for ur online accounts

Creating strong passwords for all your online accounts is not a thing you should do. It is a thing you must do. There are so many Algorithms used to Crack a Password. Cracking Password Time solely depends on the characters you used. If you use Strong Password it will take years to Crack it.

Types of password:

*Passwords that contain only Letters
Praveen
*Passwords that contain only numbers
1821989
*Passwords that contain only Special characters
!@#$%^
*Passwords that contain only Letters & Numbers
P100c
*Passwords that contain only Letters & Special Characters
P@ssword?
*Passwords that contain only Special Characters & Numbers
(@$514)
*Passwords that contain only Letters, Special Characters & Numbers
A;wn@l6?%

You can see that the Last password with a Combination with Letters, Special Characters & Numbers seems to be more secure.

I have taken this Password Cracking Time Result from this Site:
http://www.lockdown.co.uk/?pg=combi&s=articles

What makes a strong password?

I shall not elaborate on this since many sites have already discussed this in great detail. In a nutshell, a strong password must constitute the following:

  • It needs to contain special characters such as @#$%^&
  • It must be at least 8 characters long.
  • It must not have any common words such as 123, password, your birth date, your login name and any words that can be found in the dictionary.
  • A variation of capitalization and small letters

In my opinion, even if your password consists of the above, it is still not enough. Your password needs to be totally unique and different for each and every one of your online accounts. This is to make sure that in the event that one account is hacked into, your other accounts will not be affected.

You must be wondering how you are going to remember so many passwords when you have a problem remembering your existing one.

Keepass a Small Utility that is used to Store all your Passwords. I have already discussed briefly how to save Passwords using Keepass.

1. First, think of a thing, date, phrase, event, place or anything that is unique only to you. It must be at least 8 characters long. I call this the salt term. For demonstration purposes, I will use my name the salt term. Note that the capital letters and the space in between the name are part of the salt term. For your own account, please select a salt term that is difficult for other to guess.

2. I used the following rules to replace the regular characters with special characters. You can form your own rule.

  • Replace all the ‘a’ with @
  • Replace all the ’K’ with <
  • Repalce any space with %
  • Replace any ‘e’ with 0
  • Replace any ‘u’ with 3

In this case, the simple term Praveen becomes Pr@v00n%<

3. Now go to Password Meter and test the strength of your salt term.

The above screenshot is the result my Password Strength. If your salt term is not strong enough, you will see a list of items that you can improve on.

Is that enough?

That is only the beginning. To really make it secure and hard for others to guess, you will need to change your password every few months, this is Very Important. Some of you may find it a chore to come up with new passwords every month.

Conclusion

Generating and using a strong password is only your first line of defense against hackers.

The most important thing that you should take note of is your internet browsing habits. When you are using a public terminal, make sure that it has the proper firewall and anti-virus installed, make sure your network is secure, log out when you are done with your session and clear the cache once you are done.

Using Video Clips In A PowerPoint Presentation

Q: I want to put a video in a PowerPoint presentation but I don’t know how. Please help.

A: PowerPoint presentations have become a staple of the corporate culture. Inserting a video into a PowerPoint presentation is actually quite simple.

  1. First, save the video that you want to include in your presentation.
  2. Next, at the appropriate location in your presentation, select Insert, Movies and Sounds, Movie from File.
  3. A window will open allowing you to browse to the video clip that you saved earlier. Browse to the appropriate location. Click OK.
  4. A dialog box will appear asking if you would like the video to play automatically when the current slide appears. Select Yes or No.
  5. You will see the video frame on your slide. From this point, you can move the video frame around the slide much like an image. You can also resize the video frame in the same manner you would use to resize an image, but be conscious of the fact that you may distort the images in your video by resizing the frame.
  6. Preview your video in the slideshow, by selecting Slideshow, View Slideshow.

Your video should be integrated into your presentation.

Note: When you are adding a video to a PowerPoint presentation, it is important to remember that you will need to have the appropriate video format (QuickTime, RealPlayer, etc.) on all of the computers that will be using this presentation. For example, if you are using this slideshow at client sites, you may want to be sure to verify that all of the computers you will be using this presentation on have the correct player.

I hope this information helps! Thanks a bunch!

Share an Internet Connection With Multiple Computers

Linux offers the ability to act as both firewall and router for
multiple computers. You can easily set this up using iptables.

Execute the following commands on your Linux box. This example assumes
that eth0 is the network interface connected to the cable or DSL modem.

# iptables -t nat -A POSTROUTING -o eth0 -j MASQUERADE
# modprobe ip_conntrack_ftp
# echo 1 > /proc/sys/net/ipv4/ip_forward
# iptables -P INPUT DROP

Of course, this is greatly simplified; it's just the basics to get you
up and running quickly.

Keep in mind that it doesn't matter what systems you're running on your
network, be it Windows, Macs, or other Linux systems. All you need to
do is tell those clients to use this Linux machine as the gateway.
